Marin County Poet Laureate

We are delighted to announce the selection of the newest
Marin County Poet Laureate for 2019-2021: Terry Lucas!

Marin County poet laureate 2019-2021 Terry Lucas

Project: “Poetry as Connection”: Poetry for a wider community begins with a wider community of poets.

What does “Poetry as Connection” mean?

Poetry connects people. During times of celebration we turn to poetry to express our gratitude. In times of grief and loss we turn to poetry for the comfort and healing it can bring. In both instances, poetry provides a sense of community. But at any time, poetry can connect us to others and to ourselves in a deeper way—emotionally, cognitively, and behaviorally.

Why is “Poetry as Connection” important?

Poets need readers and audiences. They also need one another. Individuals and communities need poets. The reading of poetry is on the rise, while the reading of novels is on the decline. Even so, too many people have not read a poem since they were in school.

Who will this project connect?

As Marin Poet Laureate, I will make connecting poets with their audiences, and with their readers, as well as with one another, a priority. In this way I will help residents of Marin have access to more poetry, and help them to find poets that speak to them, particularly in areas now underserved.
