Poetry in the High Schools

The Marin Poetry Center’s High School Poetry Program goal is to excite students about poetry. We do this by sponsoring teen-related projects that celebrate the arts and through our High School Poetry Contest culminating in the publication of a High School Poetry Anthology and a gala Award Ceremony. The submission period for the 2019 High School Poetry Contest will open in October 2018.

2019 H.S. Poetry Contest open for submissions:
October 15, 2018 – January 11, 2019
Please review our Contest Guidelines.

The annual Awards Ceremony for the MPC High School Poetry Competition took place on April 19, 2018 at The Marin School, and the house was packed! Students, coached by Joel Eis of Rebound Bookstore, gave wonderful voice to their poems, and the reception beforehand was terrific, with delicious food catered by Gaby Rilleau. Marin Poet Laureate Rebecca Foust judged the contest and emceed the awards ceremony, and a cadre of readers chose the anthology’s poems from more than 1200 submissions. Thanks to anthology editor Les Bernstein, book designer Judith Anderson and to the others who helped create the anthology and event, and also to The Marin School for hosting it. Copies of the anthology, “Rock, Papers, Scissors,” will be available at future Third Thursday events.
